Cold Case Rape Investigation

(Fayetteville, NC) – April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Detectives with the Fayetteville Police Department’s Cold Case Sexual Assault Unit are working to solve several cold case investigations. Each week during the month of April a cold case will be released in efforts to get assistance from the public to solve these cases.

This week we are focusing on rapes that occurred between March 2006 and January 2008. During this time frame the Fayetteville Police Department investigated a series of six (6) rapes which occurred in the North Fayetteville/Ramsey Street area and have remained unsolved.  These rapes were committed by a suspect who was dubbed the “Ramsey Street Rapist.”  DNA belonging to the unknown suspect was recovered at three (3) of the crime scenes and has been uploaded to the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS).  The FPD has not received any CODIS hits to a particular person, but the FPD did receive a case-to-case match in connection with a March 2004 peeping tom incident which occurred in Harnett County, North Carolina (about 15 minutes from the North Fayetteville area).

During the investigations from 2006-2008, the Ramsey Street Rapist was described as follows:

Race/Sex: White Male

Age: 20 – mid 30s (now late 20s-mid 40s)

Height: 5’9”-6’3”

Weight: 165-230 pounds

Build: Thin to Average

Hair: Short Black or Dark Brown,

Facial Hair: The suspect was described in all but one investigation as having some sort of facial hair – either a goatee or mustache

Speech: Southern Accent

Smells: Musky breath, Body odor, Smelled like machinery oil (mechanic-like smell)

Clothing: Wore various hoody-type shirts during five of the six rapes including a dark-colored pull-over hooded style sweatshirt with Orange County Choppers logo on the front and a Navy Blue or Dark Green hoody sweatshirt with Norte Dame written across the chest.

Attached are four (4) Snapshot DNA composites created by Parabon Nanolabs utilizing the suspect’s DNA. The composites are with and without facial hair and aged progressed to what the suspect may look like today.  Detectives are seeking the public’s assistance with identifying this suspect and have remained relentless in their search for answers for the last eleven (11) years.  The FPD’s Cold Case Sexual Assault Unit is hopeful that this individual will be recognized and he will be brought to justice.

One of the victims of the Ramsey Street Rapist has filmed herself speaking about the rapes and authorized the release of the videos to assist in the apprehension of this violent offender for all victims of sexual assault.  The videos have been uploaded to the FPD’s Facebook page and may be used/shared from our Facebook page by members of the media for dissemination.
