Mayor Holds Play Ball Event with Buies Creek Astros

Post Date:06/19/2017 10:51 AM

(Fayetteville, N.C.) — The public is invited to a Play Ball special event on Friday, June 30 featuring players from the Buies Creek Astros. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to Noon at Lamon Street Field, located at 121 Lamon St.

The event is part of the United States Conference of Mayors continued support of the “Play Ball Summer” initiative, which focuses on the fun nature of baseball and encourages an active and healthy lifestyle for kids in all communities. During the summer of 2017, mayors are implementing the initiative throughout cities with the goal of strengthening the connection of communities with the national pastime of baseball.

During the event, select Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks & Recreation summer camp participants will play one inning of wiffle ball with Buies Creek Astros’ players. The Astros players will also play a game of catch (no innings) with the public and summer campers after wiffle ball. Summer campers and the public are asked to bring their own baseball gloves.

Additionally, the Astros will sign autographs and meet the public. The public is encouraged to bring items to be signed by the Astros, like baseballs, shirts and cards, as well as pens and Sharpies for autographs and cameras for pictures.

"I am excited to bring the Play Ball special event to Fayetteville and want to thank the Buies Creek Astros and Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks & Recreation for their help in making this possible,” Mayor Nat Robertson said. “Baseball is our national pastime, and with the Astros bringing Minor League Baseball back to Fayetteville in 2019, this is a great opportunity for the public and summer campers to meet professional baseball players and receive encouragement on living an active and healthy lifestyle.”
