With one of the largest military bases in the country and the associated frequently-changing population, the community sought a way to help orient visitors and new residents and engage them more fully in the many area events and attractions. The Fayetteville Area Convention and Visitors Bureau (FACVB) took the lead in convening a Wayfinding Task Force Committee with members from the County, City, Fort Bragg and other municipalities as well as the Chamber and NCDOT. The FACVB, in concert with the City, led the Task Force Committee in the funding, consultant selection and plan development including Phase I details. The result is a product that embodies the community's sense of place- distinctive yet timeless, and reflecting pride and support for the military community.
Phase I involved the design of the sign system, a master plan for placement around the County, and fabrication and installation of the highest priority signs. The project was made possible through a National Historic Preservation Preserve America grant, which the FACVB wrote on behalf of the City. Other resources for the project came from the FACVB and the City, with capital funding proposed for Phase II. The Fayetteville Airport installed a customized version of the signage at the same time.
