Requirements

The minimum certification standards for all Justice Officers (Deputies, detention officers and telecommunicators) are set out in 12 NCAC 10B .0301 and are summarized as follows:
1.  U.S. citizen
2. 18 years of age
3. High school graduate or equivalent
4. Fingerprinted by the employing agency
5. Medical examination as required by 12 NCAC 10B .0304
6. Psychological examination (appointment date 1/1/2022 and after)
7. Negative drug screen
8. Notify the Sheriffs’ Standards Division within five (5) business days of any criminal charges, Domestic Violence Orders and/or Civil No-Contact Orders
9. Good moral character
10.Background investigation including a personal interview pursuant to 12NCAC 10B .0305 and .0306
11. Not been convicted of or committed a crime or crimes as specified in 12NCAC 10B.0307 (See below under criminal history).

 

Automatic Disqualifiers

Drug Use-

Marijuana: Can not have used it in any capacity within the last 12 months.

Schedule 1,2,&3 Drugs: Can not have used it within the last 5 to 10 years. Disqualification is based on a case by case basis. Contact the recruiter if you have any questions. Criminal History- 

In terms of criminal history, consistent with and subject to the requirements of 12 NCAC 10B .0204, every justice officer employed or certified in North Carolina shall not have committed or been convicted by a local, state, federal, or military court of:
(1) a felony; 
(2) a crime for which the punishment could have been imprisonment for more than two years; 
(3) a crime or unlawful act defined as a "Class B misdemeanor" within the five year period prior to the date of certification ; 
(4) a crime or unlawful act defined as a "Class B Misdemeanor" occurring after the date of certification; 
(5) four or more crimes or unlawful acts defined as "Class B misdemeanors" regardless of the date of conviction; 
(6) four or more crimes or unlawful acts defined as "Class A misdemeanors" except the applicant may be employed if the last conviction occurred more than two years prior to the date of certification or 
(7) a combination of four or more Class A Misdemeanor or Class B Misdemeanor regardless of the date;
(8) for personnel who are authorized to carry a firearm in the execution of their duties, an offense that, pursuant to 18 USC 922(g)(8), would prohibit the possession of a firearm or ammunition.
All Misdemeanors in North Carolina that are not in the Class B Misdemeanor manual are therefore considered Class A Misdemeanors for the above requirements. For a list of all Class B Misdemeanors click here.

DWI/DUI or any other variant of impaired operation-

Will not be eligible until 3 years from the date of disposition.
