Fayetteville Area System of Transit (FAST) began in 1976 when the City of Fayetteville assumed operations from a private transportation system operated by the Cape Fear Transit Bus Company. Cape Fear Transit provided service in Fayetteville, as well as Little Rockfish in Hope Mills. It operated seven days a week, from 5:30 AM to midnight, with a fleet size of 23 buses and 20 bus operators.
Today, the services provided are more efficient, with FAST completing close to 1.6 million passenger trips annually. As a result, citizens of Fayetteville have better access to jobs, medical facilities, shopping and recreation opportunities. FAST provides a critical link to economic development and a better quality of life in Fayetteville. One thing that has not changed is FAST's mission and commitment to providing safe and affordable transportation services to more than 6,000 daily passengers.
FAST Transit Center
The FAST Transit Center serves as a central hub for FAST’s fixed route bus network. The center is located downtown on the city block bound by Robeson Street, Franklin Street, Winslow Street and Russell Street. The center is strategically located within walking distance of City Hall, Fayetteville Police Department Headquarters, Highsmith Rainey Hospital, the Medical Arts Building, Airborne and Special Operations Museum, Fayetteville’s Amtrak station and Segra Stadium.
In addition to FAST transit buses, the center also houses Greyhound intercity buses, includes a stop on Russell Street for MegaBus and is within one block of Fayetteville's AMTRAK station. The FAST Transit Center is approximately 34,000 SF with just over 27,000 SF for transit offices and operations as well as 7,700 of shell space available to lease for other transit supportive businesses.
The new center is helping transform the Fayetteville Area System of Transit's image and its efforts to provide an attractive transportation option to all in our area. Our center is now considered a safe and comfortable for people to gather. It truly provides multimodal connections between local transit and intercity transportation options.
The Center was designed as LEED Silver for efficient use of energy and water. It has a large community room that is available for both public agency and private group use. The center has thus far exceeded expectations with regards to energy efficiency. The center also has two large cisterns to collect rain water to use to irrigate its landscaped areas.
Jim Gallucci, a well-known artist from Greensboro designed and installed colorful art screening for two large storm water cisterns adding a functional public art component to the center.
On the second level of the center, just inside the main entrance, you will find FAST administrative offices and a large community room that is available for the public’s use for meetings and other gatherings.
