We are using four broad sustainability categories to organize the Action Plan. These categories will have goals, strategies and action steps. As each is implemented, we believe we’ll be bringing Fayetteville closer to our collective vision of a sustainable city. Here are the categories we are working with:
Energy and Building Efficiency: Refers to the practice of optimizing the energy use of buildings to reduce consumption, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and enhance overall sustainability. Measures may include implementing energy-saving technologies, improving insulation, utilizing renewable energy sources, and designing buildings that maximize natural light and ventilation. The goal is to create spaces that are both environmentally friendly and cost-effective, contributing to a sustainable future.
Transportation and Mobility: Involves adjusting the ways we move around to minimize environmental impact by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, promoting the use of public transit, walking, cycling, and adopting low-emission or zero-emission vehicles. These strategies aim to provide equitable access to transportation while enhancing efficiency and reducing reliance on fossil fuels, thereby contributing to healthier communities and a more sustainable planet.
Resilient Community and Green Infrastructure: A resilient community is one that proactively adapts to and recovers from environmental, social, and economic challenges, such as climate change and natural disasters, while maintaining its core functions and ensuring the well-being of its residents. Green infrastructure refers to the integration of natural and engineered systems, like parks, green roofs, and permeable pavements, designed to manage stormwater, reduce urban heat islands, and improve air quality, thereby enhancing the community’s resilience and overall environmental sustainability.
Resource Conservation: Means the responsible management and use of natural resources to minimize waste, preserve ecosystems, and ensure the long-term availability of essential materials. This includes practices like reducing water consumption, recycling, and protecting biodiversity. The focus is on meeting current needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs.
