How You Can Help Us

In an effort to collect household refuse in a more economical and efficient manner, Solid Waste asks residents to use the following guidelines for rollout cart placement to assist our drivers. (These guidelines reference Fayetteville City Ordinance 22-10.)

• Place rollout carts 1 foot from the curb by 6 a.m.
• Rollout cart handles should face the residence
• Allow 4 feet between rollout carts and other objects
• Rollout cart lids should be within 6-8 inches of closing
• Do not place rollout carts under or near low-hanging wires, tree branches, power lines, mailboxes, or other obstructions
• Remove vehicles from the street on your designated collection day
• All waste bags must be inside the rollout cart 
• Remove rollout carts from the curb after collection

Our main focus is to provide the efficient removal of household waste, however, we do offer other services to make it more convenient for you to keep your property clean. Along with household waste, our crews collect yard waste, large limbs, and bulky items, all under the same annual fee.

Additional fees will be charged for pickups that exceed standard amounts or volume. (Ex. Large limbs that exceed 10 cubic yards must be scheduled for paid collection.) All fees must be paid prior to collection.  Click here to see our fee schedule.

Household Waste

Household Waste collected by the City consists of any non-recyclable articles from households, such as garbage, trash, discarded clothing, toys, sweepings, rags, etc. Household Waste items must be properly placed inside the designated Rollout Carts, in compliance with the following regulations:

• Household Rollout Carts must be placed at the Curbside by 6 a.m. on your Collection day.
• For each Collection day, all Household Waste must be placed inside the maximum of two (2) city-issued green or brown 96-gallon Rollout Carts, one (1) foot from the Curbside.
• Household Rollout Carts must be placed side-by-side, 4 feet from other Rollout Carts, mailboxes, fixed objects and away from trees, power lines, parked vehicles, equipment and all other obstructions.
• Rollout Cart handles must face the residence and lids should not be open more than 6-8 inches when filled.
• All Household Waste shall be separated from all other waste prior to Collection.
• It is requested that all bags placed inside the Household Waste Rollout Cart be tied, to avoid spills.

To collect Household Waste, our crews drive Automated Side-Loader (ASL) trucks and use a mechanical arm to lift and dump Rollout Carts, while the driver stays inside the vehicle. This speeds up the collection process, so everyone's refuse is collected in a timely manner.

Recycling

Paper, glass, plastic, and metal items that are empty and clear of waste should be put in the 96-gallon BLUE Rollout Cart for collection. For more information about recycling, click here.

Yard Waste                                                                                                        (Find information on Large Limb Waste here)

Yard waste includes yard trimmings, grass, and leaves that are put in 96-gallon (green or brown) City-issued rollout carts, plastic bags, 32-gallon cans made of metal or plastic with a lid, or twigs/trimmings tied into bundles weighing no more than 50 pounds. Twigs/trimmings must not exceed 3 feet in length and 3 inches in diameter.  Twigs/trimmings can be put in approved containers or bundled. Crews will collect a maximum of ten containerized items, in approved containers, on your designated collection day. 

Loose leaves and pine straw, must be PAID AND SCHEDULED for collection, during the non-loose leaf collection period, through our FayFixIt app, by calling 433-1FAY(1329), or by visiting 455 Grove St.

*We DO NOT collect:

• Rocks, logs, or stumps.                                                                                                               
• Yard Waste placed inside reusable bags or tarp bags                                                 
• Yard Waste mixed with any other Waste
• Contractor-generated debris

**If more than ten containerized items are set at the curb in approved containers, a driver will collect the rest (up to ten) on your next collection day.**

Large Limb Waste                                                                                            (Find information on Yard Waste here)

Large Limb Waste includes tree trimmings, large shrubbery and large limbs. They must not exceed five (5) feet in length, six (6) inches in diameter, and can be placed in pile up to 3 feet high, but no more than 10 cubic yards. Large limbs must be placed in an orderly manner at the Curbside at least four (4) feet away from all other objects. Large limbs must not be mixed with any other waste.

Large limb piles exceeding 10 cubic yards must be PAID AND SCHEDULED for collection through our app FayFixIT, by calling 433-1FAY (1329), or by visiting 455 Grove St.

Other Requirements:

• There must be a single-family residential unit on the property to qualify for large limb removal service;
• A fee, as provided in the Solid Waste Fee Schedule, will be charged prior to the collection of large limbs exceeding 10 cubic yards or more that are generated by the homeowner or occupant;
• We will not collect Waste of any kind placed in vacant or abandoned lots. This is considered land clearing;
• Do not place Large Limb Waste in the road, under trees, near powerlines (watch out for low hanging lines), mailboxes, cars, fences, or ANY other obstructions.
• We will not collect Large Limb Waste mixed with any other waste.
• We will not collect contractor-generated debris.

Bulky Items

Bulky items include chairs, tables, bicycles, children's toys, brooms, mops, refrigerators, washing machines, dryers, couches, and more! Crews will collect up to five (5) items, at no charge, placed in an orderly manner at the Curbside. All items must be at least four (4) feet away from all other objects. 

Bulky items of six (6) or more, as well as owner-generated construction debris (to include carpet of any size), must be paid and scheduled for collection through our FayFixIt app, by calling 433-1FAY(1329), or by visiting 455 Grove Street. Please see the Solid Waste Fee Schedule for more information.                             

All contractor-generated debris will a NOT be collected. 

Other Requirements:

• There must be a single-family residential unit on the property to qualify for bulky item collection service;
• We will not collect Waste of any kind placed in vacant or abandoned lots. This is considered land clearing;
• Do not place bulky items in the road, under trees, near powerlines (watch out for low-hanging lines), mailboxes, cars, fences, or ANY other obstructions.

• All bulky items such as refrigerators, freezers, cabinets, entertainment centers and all other furniture and appliances must be emptied before collection. 
• All doors must be secured or removed from bulky items before collection.
• All lawn care equipment must be drained of oil and gasoline.
• Concrete in, or attached to, metal poles must be removed.

Rollout Carts

Each single-family dwelling is issued one 96-gallon rollout cart for household waste and one 96-gallon rollout cart for recyclables. 

Green Rollout Carts: Residents can place household waste OR yard waste in this rollout cart for collection. Residents must not mix household waste and yard waste together. If waste is mixed together with any other type of waste, it will not be collected. Please refer to the Collection Schedule to find your designated collection days for all services provided.

*This rollout cart remains the property of the City of Fayetteville and cannot be removed from the residence to which it is assigned.

Blue Rollout Carts: Residents can place ONLY recyclable material in this rollout cart. Residents must not place any other type of waste inside of this cart or it will not be collected. Please refer to the Collection Schedule to find your designated collection days for all services provided.

*This rollout cart remains the property of the City of Fayetteville and cannot be removed from the residence to which it is assigned.

Brown Rollout Carts: Residents can purchase an additional brown 96-gallon rollout cart for a fee of $60. Once purchased, this rollout cart becomes the property of the resident and can be used for household waste OR yard waste. Residents must not mix household waste and yard waste together. If waste is mixed together with any other type of waste, it will not be collected. The brown rollout cart comes with a 10-year warranty. Residents can purchase and pick up the brown rollout cart at 455 Grove Street or by reaching out to the Call Center at (910) 433-1FAY (1329). Brown rollout carts can also be delivered for a $25 fee. 

Rollout carts will not be issued to unoccupied dwellings.

Rollout Cart Repairs, Replacements or Orders

Residents can contact the 1-FAY Call Center at (910) 433-1FAY (1329) to report rollout cart issues, order a replacement rollout cart, or order an additional rollout cart. 

• Examples of rollout cart issues include vandalism and theft. 

• For repairs, a technician will inspect the rollout cart for possible repair or replacement. Rollout cart damage caused by misuse or neglect will be repaired or replaced at the user's expense.

Cumberland County operates 16 Container Sites where residents can dispose of refuse on their own if they choose. Cumberland County also operates the Wilkes Road Treatment and Processing Facility and the Household Hazardous Waste Facility. Fall Loose Leaf Collection

The City of Fayetteville's loose-leaf collection program is operated by Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks & Recreation. It is a great service for residents during the fall season. 

Instructions (only during Loose Leaf collection season)

• Rake your leaves and pine straw curbside by the day prior to your first scheduled day of pickup 
• Bad weather may cause delays
• Leaves and pine straw only - no tree limbs
• Place leaves and pine straw behind the curb away from storm drains and out of the road. Leaves and pine straw left in the street can cause stormwater pollution and may obstruct the storm drainage system.

Containerize for Weekly Pickup

You don't have to wait for leaf pickup! Every week, Solid Waste crews will collect leaves placed in approved bags or containers, on your regular Yard Waste day. This helps keep your yard clean and keeps the leaves out of storm drains!

Leaf Season Tips

• During Loose-Leaf Season, residents can pick up waste bags at any recreation center or fire station
• Citizens can purchase a brown rollout cart for $57, which can be used for weekly collection of leaves and pine straw, as well as other yard waste. The City can deliver it to your house for $25 or you can pick it up at Solid Waste on Grove Street. The rollout cart becomes the property of the resident once purchased and has a 10-year warranty.
