Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks and Recreation (FCPR)

“Veterans are great additions to the department because of their commitment and organizational skills to getting the job done, adapting easily to changes, leading by example to motivate coworkers and their employees to get the work done. Familiar with working with different personalities and this helps in dealing with different types of customers who utilize the facility whether it be language barrier, customer who is needing assistance or a difficult customer. They are flexible with work hours due to the nature of working 12 hour shifts during deployments. Veterans love the idea of still meeting different people who come through the doors of the recreation facilities from all around the city, county, state and other locations.

Fayetteville Regional Airport

Tony Coleman, Airport

“The Fayetteville Regional Airport is an excellent place to work.  Airport veterans who work for the City of Fayetteville and tenant organizations cherish the idea of serving those who voluntarily risk their lives to support and defend the constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.    This community is still filled with history, heroes, and a hometown feeling and nothing surpasses the joy of seeing husbands, wives, children, and significant others reunited after an extended military deployment.”

John Santana, Senior Skilled Trade Tech, Fayetteville Regional Airport

U.S. Army, 21 years

“The reason why I come and enjoy work for the City is because the people at the Airport work together as a team. We have no problem assisting one another. There is not a mission we can’t complete. The pay is cool and I enjoy coming to work meeting new people every day. The military always say “military strong, Fayetteville strong”

Darlene Carter, Custodian, Fayetteville Regional Airport

U.S. Army, 7 years

“I did eight years of service with the United States Army from 1981-1988 in the field of 92 B Medical Laboratory Specialist. Seeing Airport patrons, greeting and reuniting with family or the watching soldiers deploy/return is the most rewarding part of being a custodian. Fayetteville Regional Airport offers great benefits for their employees and their families. Working here has been a rewarding experience.”

Fire Department

Harold, Fire

"Serving in the United Stated Air Force gave me a sense of pride and fulfillment to my country. After my service ended, I still had a deep yearning to serve and felt that the Fayetteville Fire Department can not only fill that void but made it so I can directly serve the community I live in. I may wear a different uniform now but I still carry the same drive and duty to the community I serve."

Christopher Willard, Firefighter, Fayetteville Fire Department

U.S. Army, 6 years

"The Fire Department helped me find that comradery that you find in the military that you don't get with most civilian jobs. Because of its organization and structure, transitioning from the military to the Fire Department has been extremely easy."

Jeffrey Tenner, Fire

"Like the military, the Fire Department has discipline and structure as well as the brotherhood that I'm used to. I can rely on them to have my back and I know they can rely on me, no matter what comes. At the end of the day, we are a big family and it's a bond that can never be broken."

Solid Waste Division

Kyle. Public Services

“I am a former member of the United States Army and a veteran of Desert Shield/Desert Storm. I have been employed with the City of Fayetteville, North Carolina, for 11 years. My department is good for veterans or anyone who is not afraid of hard work. The Solid Waste Division is a good place to reinforce any investments toward a future that started with the military. The same camaraderie that one had in the military can be had with us. There are few better places to start the second act in life.”

Darryn Bailey

U.S. Army, 10 years

“I did ten years in the Army, which took me from the streets of Los Angeles, California. I truly enjoyed my time traveling to different countries during my service time. These are places I would not have gone on my own. Once out of the Army, I worked various jobs, but once I was hired by the City of Fayetteville, it was the best job ever. I have been here for more than 20 years. I am so grateful for the City of Fayetteville hiring me and allowing me to excel and be great."

Wendell Thomas Jr., Public Services

“Motor Transportation and Driving Instructor was my MOS (job), all of which led me to a few driving jobs in and out until I came to the City of Fayetteville. I started as an Operator II in 2005 and worked my way up to a crew supervisor today. I wouldn't change my military experience for anything, I feel like the military prepared me for the future, and I look forward to finishing my career here. This department is a free-flowing job that leaves you responsible for all of your actions, with nobody constantly watching over your shoulder. Basically, do your job, be alert and safe and go home.”
