- Welcome to our All-America City. The City provides one green 96-gallon rollout cart for household waste and one 96-gallon blue rollout cart for recycling, to each single family address within the City limits. These rollout carts are to stay at the residence. If there is not a green or blue rollout cart at your home, please call 910-433-1329. Please use the lookup feature on our web pages, under Pickup Schedules, to see your collection days for household waste. For your biweekly recycling schedule, visit our Recycling page, and using your household waste collection day, look for your street on either the A or B route.
- You can use the lookup schedule on our website; find it under Pickup Schedules. Simply type in your street address to view your regular collection days.
You can find the holiday schedule by visiting the Solid Waste website. Simply click on the following link: https://www.fayettevillenc.gov/city-services/public-services/solid-waste/holiday-collection-schedule.
Please place appropriate household waste in a bag before placing it in your 96-gallon City-provided green or brown rollout cart(s). Place rollout cart(s) one foot from the curb, by 6 a.m. on your collection day. Rollout cart handles must face the home and must be placed four feet from any other objects or rollout cart(s). Remove rollout cart(s) from the curb, by the end of the day, on your collection day. Rollout carts should be stored in an inconspicuous place, not easily viewed from the street. Additional bags placed on top of or next to the rollout carts, or other containers filled with waste, will NOT be collected. Your household waste collection day is also your recycling day (recycling is biweekly) with the same guidelines for rollout cart placement and removal. Recyclables should not be bagged, but remain loose in the 96-gallon City-provided blue rollout cart. The blue rollout cart is for recyclables only.
I put out three or more household waste rollout carts for curbside pickup, but only two were collected. Can you explain why?
Effective July 1, 2023, the City of Fayetteville will only collect two 96-gallon, City-provided rollout carts in order to maintain consistent service. Residents can choose to use either two green rollout carts, one brown and one green rollout cart, or two brown rollout carts for their household waste.- If your brown rollout cart is over ten years old and Solid Waste cannot repair it due to the unavailability of parts, you will have to buy a new one. However, if it is less than ten years old, Solid Waste will provide a free replacement rollout cart if it is broken.
- Yes, you can buy a brown 96-gallon rollout cart provided by the City. It can be used for household waste or yard waste, but not for recycling. The cost is $60.00 if you pick it up yourself. It can also be delivered to you for a fee of $25. Additionally, each rollout cart comes with a 10-year warranty, and it's yours to keep if you move. To purchase an additional rollout cart, visit the Solid Waste office at 455 Grove St, Monday through Friday, from 8am to 4pm. You can also contact the Call Center at (910) 433-1FAY (1329).
- All eligible Residential Units and Single Business Units must use 96-gallon, City-provided Rollout Carts (Green or Brown) to remove Household Waste and 96-gallon, City-provided rollout carts (Blue) to remove recycling. However, you can use your personal rollout cart for yard waste. If a rollout cart is damaged or falls in the hopper, replacing a City-issued rollout cart costs an approximately of $55.00. The City is not responsible for replacing personal rollout carts.
- Any City-provided Rollout Cart that is lost or stolen, through no fault of the resident, will be replaced by the City at no cost to the resident.
If your household waste/recycling is not collected, please use the SeeClickFix app or call 910-433-1329 to report missed collections and we will have it serviced as soon as possible. Please note that the ability to return for collection will depend on whether there were any issues during the initial pickup at your residence.
Before the City-provided blue 96-gallon rollout carts to residents for recycling, I upgraded my small blue rollout cart. Can I use both of the blue 96-gallon rollout carts for recycling?
At this time yes. If you upgraded to a blue 96-gallon City-provided rollout cart before the City distributed them to residents, you can use both rollout carts for recycling.- In order to prevent recycling contamination, the City mandates that only recyclable materials be placed in the blue 96-gallon rollout cart. It is important to note that yard waste is not considered recycling and should not be put in the blue rollout cart, as this can contaminate the recycling materials. Proper use of the designated rollout cart helps to reduce costs for the City, as they are charged for any contamination in the recycling process.
- To view a list of recyclable items, please visit www.fayettevillenc.gov/recycling.
The City will collect one 96-gallon City-provided blue rollout cart on your designated collection day. If you previously upgraded before June 30, 2021, the City will collect up to two (2) 96-gallon City-provided blue rollout carts, for now, on your designated collection day. Recycling collection is a contract service and does not allow for the purchase of additional blue recycling rollout carts. To find your collection day, please enter your address into the module located on our website www.fayettevillenc.gov/solidwaste.
Do not paint any City-provided rollout cart. Painting the rollout carts can cause confusion and contamination. Solid Waste will remove all City-provided painted rollout carts. The City assigns specific colors to the rollout carts, and they should only be used for the services as listed here:
Green- Household and Yard Waste (DO NOT MIX HOUSEHOLD WASTE WITH YARD WASTE)
Brown- Household and Yard Waste (DO NOT MIX HOUSEHOLD WASTE WITH YARD WASTE)
Blue- Recycling Only
- The Solid Waste Ordinance has been revised as of January 2023 and went into effect July 1, 2023.
- The Solid Waste Ordinance can be found at the following link: https://online.encodeplus.com/regs/fayetteville-nc/doc-viewer.aspx#secid-39.
- Paper, bottles and other non-yard waste materials will not be accepted at the Wilkes Rd location. The City is fined for any contaminated yard waste brought to the facility.
- No. The Solid Waste Division will ONLY collect yard waste and large limb waste that the owner or occupant of a residence generates. Waste that a contractor or any other person generates will NOT be collected.
- The City does not collect contractor-generated construction materials. If the items are homeowner-generated, the City will pick them up for a fee. Please call 910-433-1329 for more information or to schedule a pickup.
- Contractors are responsible for removing the debris they create. When you pay a contractor, part of the fee goes towards disposing of the debris at the landfill. If Solid Waste removes it, we will take on their disposal fee.
- Our driver has noticed a problem with your debris. The tag will indicate the issue, which must be fixed before we can collect it.
- Loose leaves and pine straw are only collected, when not in the proper bag or container, from November through February by Parks and Rec. At all other times, it must be in green or brown Rollout Carts, plastic bags, or 32-gallon metal or plastic cans with a tight-fitting lid.
- The Solid Waste Ordinance states that rollout carts must be beside or behind the home by the end of the day, on your collection day.
- This causes a spill hazard for the driver. Drivers are not supposed to dump a rollout cart that could spill items they would have to pick up by hand.
Why won't the driver pick up my rollout cart next to my mailbox/car/fence/tree/or another rollout cart?
Items must be four (4) feet from all obstructions, so there is room for the claw on the truck to wrap around it without damaging anything nearby.- The City will repair city issued or purchased rollout carts that have been damaged while a service is being rendered or due to normal wear and tear. If it cannot be fixed we will replace it. We are unable to repair or replace carts that were damaged as a result of vandalism, abuse, odor, or over ten years old. The City will also maintain blue recycling carts and brown carts purchased from the City. Call 910-433-1329 and service will be scheduled on your next collection day. The cart must be at the curb for repair. Please note that parts for older carts may not be available and in some cases a new cart will have to be purchased.

- It is against the law to put wet/oil-based paint in regular household waste. Instead, hazardous materials can only be disposed of at the Cumberland County Landfill, which has 16 satellite sites listed on its website. Please refer to the link provided above. Latex paint is not accepted at the landfill. To dispose of it properly, absorb the liquid in the paint can with kitty litter, sand, or dirt. Once the liquid is no longer free-flowing, remove the lid and put the can in a garbage bag before throwing it away in your household waste.
- Hazardous materials should be taken to the Cumberland County Hazardous Materials Collection Facility on Wilkes Rd. Tires and electronics are to be taken to the Ann St. Landfill, also operated by Cumberland County. More information about both facilities can be found at http://www.co.cumberland.nc.us/solid_waste.aspx.
- The bright orange notice is a courtesy notice reminding you to please remove your rollout carts from the curb on the day of service. It also states the consequences of not doing so. Please remember to store the rollout carts beside or behind your home on non-collection days.
I put some furniture and other items curbside, but they were not collected, and now I received a Notice of Violation for those items. Why?
Only five (5) pieces of household furniture and other "bulky" items can be curbside, at one time, for free removal. If you have more than five (5) pieces needing removal, call 910-433-1329 to pay and schedule removal.- To report any code violations within the City, you can either use SeeClickFix or call the Call Center at (910) 433-1FAY (1329). This includes issues such as abandoned rollout carts on the curb, oversized bulky items, tree limbs, and other related issues.
One of the many services provided by the Solid Waste Division is the curbside exempt or "backdoor" service. This free service is for residents who cannot place their rollout carts at the curb for weekly/biweekly household refuse and recyclable collections because of health reasons. To inquire about backdoor service, call the Call Center at (910) 433-1FAY (1329).
- If you believe your house was missed on the delivery round, please call the Call Center at (910) 433-1FAY (1329) to inquire.
